Instruction Leadership Team
Jackie Cohen - Director of Curriculum
Jackie teaches and designs all kinds of computing courses in Michigan and New York City, when she's not venturing new places to find strange and delicious flavors of pie. She used to be a software engineer, and now she builds stuff to help people learn (mostly, about programming). She has a Masters degree in Information Science from the University of Michigan, where she is now a Lecturer, and she loves seeing live music and hiking to places where she has to find ways out of canyons with 5 feet of snow.
Rachel Sobel - Head Teacher
Rachel narrowly escaped a lifetime of biology research by enrolling in the Computer Science program at the University of Washington. Since then, she's worked at Google and Cornell Tech, taught a wide variety of students, and written a novel. She lives with her girlfriend and two very small bears, and loves to listen to Florence + the Machine and Jacob Banks on infinite repeat.
Subject Instructors
Karla Polo Garcia - Prototyping
Karla is an interactive designer specialized in user-centered design. Currently, she is part of the Foundry team at Cornell Tech, doing user experience design and front-end development. In 2013 Karla immigrated from Cuba to the United States chasing a better future. In New York City she has found amazing opportunities that have made her grow professionally. Recently, Karla obtained her Masters' Degree in Fine Arts, Design, and Technology at Parsons the New School for Design, where she will be a part-time professor starting this fall. She loves drawing in her spare time.
Julia Sterling - Development
Julia is a software developer. When she is not teaching coding through programs like TEALS and MEET (and WiTNY!), she works in EdTech. She has built adaptive education tools at Knewton, and is currently helping teachers everywhere share their best ideas at Teachers Pay Teachers, an online marketplace for teachers to buy and sell teaching materials — like Etsy, but for teachers! She grew up in Brooklyn, and now lives in Manhattan with her girlfriend and cats.
Rob Domanski - Coding Weeks 1-3
Rob is a former Computer Science professor at CUNY and at various times has been affiliated with four different CUNY schools - City College, the College of Staten Island, the Macaulay Honors College, and the Graduate Center. He now works for the New York City Government's Tech Talent Pipeline program. His research focuses on Internet Governance, Hacktivism, Cybersecurity Policy, and the Politics of Algorithms. Rob is also especially proud of hosting his own Minecraft gaming server and enjoys writing Python programs for Minecraft, all on the little Raspberry Pi in his living room.
